After eight years at the helm of the capital’s Housing and Town Planning Departments, she is now in charge of the city’s urban and environmental plan. But she is more than a politician: she is also the former president of the popular assembly that first brought together politicians, architects, artists, environmentalists and social activists to design the 2014 Olympic Games – the one that will take place in the city – and she is also the founder of the social centre Barcelona en Comú, one of the most powerful political forces on the Catalan left.
That is the fundamental reason why Ada Colau is now considered one of the most important politicians in Spain. She was the only candidate to back Sánchez in last Sunday’s general election – and not just the one who was the most “progressive”. She was also the only one to be consistent in her opposition to the People’s Party (PP). “I would vote for her in a suicide pact”, a PP voter tells Carles Barceló for his book All is Fair in Football.
During the past 20 years, no other political figure has done more to change the face of Barcelona, the city’s football club and the way in which it is run. From the transformation of the Glòries neighbourhood to the Raval, from the transformation of the Ciutat Vella to the transformation of the Poble Nou, the 39-year-old politician has succeeded in transforming an area of the city with a high concentration of social housing into a new place of progressive politics.
She has also transformed Barcelona’s football club from one of the most corrupt clubs in Europe to a club that the average fan can easily relate to.
But it is not just about football.
It is about how public space is reclaimed, or reclaimed for the first time.
It is about how football stadiums and other sporting arenas are transformed.
It is about how the public square is reclaimed.
It is about how the city’s old neighbourhoods are transformed.
